Why Is My AC Leaking Water?

June 28, 2017

Excess humidity can lead to discomfort, mold growth, and health concerns and is one of the primary reasons that air conditioning was invented. While the main function of your cooling system is to reduce the temperature of the air inside your home dehumidification is a welcome byproduct of the cooling process. As excess moisture is pulled from your indoor air it collects in the condensate drain pan and is channeled outdoors and while a few stray drops of water here and there are to be expected, anything more can be cause for concern.

Common Reasons Why Your Air Conditioner Is Leaking Water

In an area like southwest Georgia where excessive levels of humidity are the norm you can expect to see minor pooling of water every now and then, but it’s important to note the causes and potential solutions of more substantial leakage and to know when to call Harrell King for air conditioner repair. Common causes of water leaks include:

  • Dirty air filter. An air filter is designed to trap particulates such as dust, pollen, mold, and other pollutants and prevent them from circulating throughout your HVAC system and living space. Once the filter becomes clogged moisture can accumulate on the evaporator coil due to restricted airflow and quickly turn to ice, and as it melts the drain pan may overflow. This type of leakage is easily preventable with regular filter changes every four to six weeks.
  • Clogged condensate line. The condensate drain line channels water from the drain pan to the outdoors and if it becomes clogged a backlog of water can form, flooding the pan and spilling in to your living space. You can try clearing the line with a wet vac, using a special attachment available at most home improvement stores, or call Harrell King for service.
  • Improper installation. Poor installation practices can result in an improperly designed condensate trap or cause the unit to become unlevel, both of which can result in water leakage.
  • Damaged drain pan. This problem can be easily verified by emptying the pan and shining a flashlight around the perimeter including the corners. If a leak is detected you can attempt to patch it using epoxy glue but replacing the pan is the most reliable solution.
  • Inadequate refrigerant charge. Low levels of refrigerant can cause the evaporator coil to freeze and melt resulting in an overflowing drain pan and is the result of either an incorrect charge or a refrigerant leak, both of which require an immediate call for service.
