Crawl Space Dehumidifying in Bainbridge, GA & Surrounding Areas

A Note on Ventilated Crawl Spaces in Georgia

Many people think ventilated crawl spaces reduce moisture problems—not in Southwest Georgia! In fact, ventilated crawl spaces often increase the heat and humidity in your living spaces in warmer months because outside air can flow into space beneath your home.

Think about it: when your crawl space has vents and it’s 90°F with 80% humidity outside, where will that warm, damp air go? Unfortunately, it can seep into your crawl space and create moisture problems until the humidity decreases. And where we live, it’s warm and humid most months out of the year.

Luckily, if you have a ventilated crawl space and are interested in preventing moisture issues, Harrell King can help! We can add vapor barriers to your crawl space in addition to sealing your vents to prevent outdoor air from sliding in.

How Does Dehumidification Work?

The first step is assessing the current situation in your crawl space. Is it ventilated or sealed? Is there any mold or standing water? We’ll want to make sure your crawl space is free of these before we start!
The actual process of dehumidifying your crawl space includes:

  • Mold removal: If there is mold in your crawl space, we will utilize an antimicrobial agent to eliminate it before we do anything else. We will also notify you of any floor or foundation damage found before proceeding.
  • Dehumidification: Installing a dehumidifier will allow you to monitor for humidity problems and eliminate excess moisture as needed.
  • Vapor barrier: Unless the floor is finished with concrete, we’ll add a vapor barrier to help reduce the transfer of moisture from the ground to the crawl space.

Why Should I Dehumidify My Crawl Space?

Moisture in your crawl space can come from leaky pipes, ground moisture, old and leaky air duct vents, or humidity in the outside air if your crawl space is ventilated. High humidity, regardless of where it comes from, can be damaging to anything stored in your crawl space and negatively affect the indoor air quality in your home.

A humid crawl space can increase:

  • Mold and mildew growth: If you’ve noticed a musty smell in your home, mold distributed from your crawl space could be the cause. Besides creating unpleasant odors, mold can cause health problems, especially for those with asthma or allergies. Mold spores in your ventilated crawl space can easily travel into your living quarters.
  • Dust mites: If you’ve never been affected by these tiny creatures, count yourself lucky. Dust mites can trigger flare-ups for those with asthma and allergies, and they can even contribute to eczema symptoms when they live in your home. Dust mites feed off of mold and bacteria, so a humid crawl space is the perfect place for them to live.
  • Floor and foundation damage: Besides mold, mildew, and poor indoor air quality, high humidity and standing water left for long periods of time in your crawl space can lead to major floor and foundation damage to your home. This could leave you with tens of thousands of dollars in damage that may not be covered by your home insurance policy.
